WEBSITE PLANNING / JAMAICA

Who should control your website accounts?

Clarify domain, hosting, source code and business-service ownership before accepting a website quotation. Agree access and recovery in writing.

Identify the accounts behind the website.

A domain, hosting account, mailbox and payment account are separate services. Knowing the website login does not necessarily give you control over all of them.

Ask for an account inventory naming the owner, administrator, renewal responsibility and recovery route. Do not send passwords through a quotation form.

Ask these questions before the build.

The agreement should explain what you receive and any continuing dependencies.

  • Who registers and renews the domain?
  • Who owns the hosting, repository and business-service accounts?
  • What source files, media licences and editing access are handed over?
  • What happens if the provider relationship ends?
  • Who holds independent backups and can restore them?

Give access without losing control.

Where a service supports it, invite the provider with the access needed for the agreed task rather than sharing the main account password. Keep recovery details with the business owner.

Ownership arrangements vary by platform and contract. Review the actual terms instead of assuming that a payment transfers every third-party licence or account.

Test the handover.

Verify that the agreed owner can sign in, find renewal information, locate the source and access the recovery instructions. Test restoration using authorised nonproduction data.

Record who handles future updates and enquiries. A working site today is not evidence that another person can recover it later.

Your questions, answered.
